Wines of the Month June 2020

Wines of the Month June 2020

This month's Wines of the Month are a white Sauvignon Blanc and rosé Pinot Noir from the Côteaux du Giennois in the Loire Valley and a great value Claret from the less well-known Côtes de Francs region of Bordeaux.

Côteaux du Giennois Blanc 2019, Domaine de Villargeaux

The Côteaux du Giennois is situated about 10km north of Sancerre in the Central Vineyards district of the Loire Valley. The soil is very similar to Sancerre, the grapes are the same - Sauvignon Blanc for White and Pinot Noir for Rosé (see below) - and the winemaking is the same. But because the region is better known for its pottery, it can't command the prices charged at Sancerre. Every time I taste the white Giennois I realise why this has been our best selling white wine (apart from our House White) over the last 12+ years.

The estate is currently converting to Biodynamic and the 2019 is probably the best vintage I have bought from them. The wine has zingy fresh, slightly citric, Sauvignon Blanc character with a long crisp mineral finish. This gives a lot of Sancerres and Pouilly-Fumés a good run for their money. Drink now and over the next year.

Côteaux du Giennois Rosé 2019, Domaine de Villargeaux

One might expect that because Pinot Noir is a fruity grape variety this would be one of those bubblegum rosés which are bordering on sweet. Not a bit of it! This has a reassuringly pale colour and is fully dry on the palate. It has lovely overtones of rose petals and raspberry fruit flavours. Great for drinking on its own in the garden and delicious with prawn dishes and smoked salmon.

Château de Francs 2014, Bordeaux-Côtes de Francs
The Côtes de Francs region lies North-East of Saint-Emilion and has a similar clay & limestone soil. Château de Francs is jointly owned by the owner of Chateau l’Angelus and the former owner of Chateau Cheval Blanc in Saint-Emilion – so great credentials. The wine is a typical Right-Bank blend of 70% Merlot 20% Cabernet Franc & 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. It has a vivacious plummy fruit character accompanied by that traditional hint of leather that contribute to a classic "Claret" taste. 2014 seems like yesterday but this wine is drinking perfectly now.
